Snorkel with a rainbow of tropical fish among beautiful coral gardens in the bay's clear, crystal waters. Enjoy the delightful picnic snack provided before you head out again, exploring vast sea caves, lava tubes and the rugged beauty of the coastline.
Departing from Honokohau Marina located 3 miles (4.8km) north of Kailua-Kona, your captain will entertain you with Hawaiian folklore and Kona history as you travel along the scenic Kona coast. Keep a lookout for spinner dolphins, green sea turtles, manta rays, humpback whales (during the winter months) and other marine life that are often encountered on the expedition.

Explore lava tubes and sea caves as you travel the inaccessible shores with spectacular views of the remote coastline. Marvel at the incredible geology as your captain entertains you with narration and excites you with skillful driving in rafts used by the Navy seals and the U.S. Coast Guard. Snorkel among beautiful tropical fish living in the coral gardens (approx. 1.5 hours) before snacking on a tasty Hawaiian snack in the marine sanctuary. Learn about the geology of the island as you venture into sea caves and past lava tubes.

The Rigid Hull Inflatable Zodiac vessels used are 24 feet (7 meters) in length, powered by twin outboard motors to produce a quick moving and highly maneuverable ride. The rafts are perfect for exploring the shallow coves, sea caves and lava tubes located along this coastline. Each boat can hold up to 16 passengers.

Immerse yourself in Kohala on a small group adventure. Come into the heart of the Hawaiian countryside to a place of old sugar plantations, ancient legends and extraordinary natural beauty. Easy walks, gorgeous countryside views and a chance to cool off in a mountain stream make this the ideal family adventure in Hawaii!
Your Kohala Waterfalls Small Group Adventure Tour begins with a journey up the North Kona and Kohala coastlines over lava flows from Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and the Kohala Mountains. Often from the shoreline you are able to see splashing spinner dolphins or in the winter months, breaching humpback whales. Pass through the quaint plantation towns of Hawi and Kapaau, site of the life-size statue of King Kamehameha I.
At the end of the road, a brief rest stop at the historic Kohala Mule Station offers one of Hawaii's most spectacular coastal views. Then the real fun begins with a bumpy but short four-wheel drive ride on an old cane road over private ranchland to the trailhead.
Getting out of the van, you'll step back into the early 1900s when plantation owners began construction of the Kohala Ditch Trail. Along the 1.5 mile (2.4km) loop trail, you'll see tunnels blasted and carved from solid rock, walk over an aqueduct and learn the story of the tremendous effort it took to build the 22 mile (35km) irrigation system. The hike is considered easy to moderate with several short, steep climbs. The total walking distance is up to 2 miles (3.2km).
Seven beautiful waterfalls grace the trail and you can take a refreshing dip in the last pool visited and play under a refreshing cascade. With stunning mountain panoramas, green valleys, pasturelands and the abundant water, the Kohala Waterfalls Adventure is a fascinating way for young and old to experience Kohala's "story of water."

Time allowing, you'll get close to many lava tubes, sea caves, sea grottos and wave powered blow holes. Learn how the island of Hawaii was formed as your captain shares their knowledge about the geology of the island's lava flows.
Due to the bouncy nature of the ride, the Zodiac Raft Whale Watching Adventure is not recommended for those with back or neck problems, or pregnant women. The Kona Coast has the calmest water and the fast moving Zodiac is the least likely vessel to cause seasickness.

Puu Oo Trail is a historic cattle drive route located at the 6,000 foot (1800 meters) level of Saddle Road on Mauna Loa's northeastern flank. This is the windward side of the island and is often cloaked in misty clouds. It is enchanting to be serenaded by the forest birds as you cross three to four miles (5-6 km) of lava trail. At the Humuula hunter check-in station just off Saddle Road, you'll go into the Kaohe Game Management Area and four-wheel up to nearly 7,000 feet (2,100 meters) on the western side of Mauna Kea.
Some of the avifauna you may spot along the way are iiwi, apapane, amakihi, omao, elepaio, and the elusive akiapolaau, with its unique multipurpose beak. In the dryforest, the track leads to a locked gate that is the entrance to the Mauna Kea Forest Preserve. Here, you'll have the opportunity to disembark from the van and take in the spectacular views. Then get down to some serious bird watching on foot in the mamane-naio forest.
You'll particularly focus on sighting the critically threatened palila, which feeds almost entirely on the green pods of the mamane tree. There are two other endemics of note to be found here: the Hawaii amakihi, and the local species of the Hawaii elepaio (noted for the white feathering on its head).
