Your Kohala Waterfalls Small Group Adventure
Tour begins with a journey up the North Kona
and Kohala coastlines over lava flows from
Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and the Kohala
Mountains. Often from the shoreline you are
able to see splashing spinner dolphins or in
the winter months, breaching humpback
whales. Pass through the quaint plantation
towns of Hawi and Kapaau, site of the
life-size statue of King Kamehameha I.
At the end of the road, a brief rest stop at
the historic Kohala Mule Station offers one
of Hawaii's most spectacular coastal views.
Then the real fun begins with a bumpy but
short four-wheel drive ride on an old cane
road over private ranchland to the
trailhead.
Getting out of the van, you'll step back
into the early 1900s when plantation owners
began construction of the Kohala Ditch
Trail. Along the 1.5 mile (2.4km) loop
trail, you'll see tunnels blasted and carved
from solid rock, walk over an aqueduct and
learn the story of the tremendous effort it
took to build the 22 mile (35km) irrigation
system. The hike is considered easy to
moderate with several short, steep climbs.
The total walking distance is up to 2 miles
(3.2km).
Seven beautiful waterfalls grace the trail
and you can take a refreshing dip in the
last pool visited and play under a
refreshing cascade. With stunning mountain
panoramas, green valleys, pasturelands and
the abundant water, the Kohala Waterfalls
Adventure is a fascinating way for young and
old to experience Kohala's "story of water."

Leave the trappings of the modern world
behind and explore the remote Kohala region
on the northern tip of the Big Island. Climb
aboard a 6x6 Pinzgauer Scrambler and witness
the life-giving and land-sculpting power of
water. Ramble through a changing landscape
of rushing streams, towering ocean cliffs,
cascading waterfalls and lush green forest,
before slowing the pace and exploring the
area by foot.
See how people's lives, throughout history,
have been tied to the water here; from the
taro loi of Hawaiians to the irrigation
ditches of Kohala sugar plantations. Kick
off your shoes and take a dip in a cool
mountain pool or simply relax and enjoy the
breathtaking coastal and valley vistas.
The small group size allows for a more
intimate and memorable journey. Traveling by
Pinzgauer is an adventure in itself but the
real reward is the connection formed with a
place in Hawaii few ever see. Time seems to
have passed by Kohala, a land rooted deeply
in the past.

a close up look at the migrating humpback
whales. It is not uncommon for them to be
curious about the raft and come right under
the boat!

Departing from Honokohau Marina located 3
miles (4.8km) north of Kailua-Kona, your
captain will entertain you with Hawaiian
folklore and Kona history as you travel
along the scenic Kona coast. Every winter,
the humpback whales migrate to Hawaii to
mate and give birth in the warm waters. Your
naturalist captain will provide narration on
the whale's behavior and the hydrophones
onboard allow you to listen for the whale
song. There are also frequent sightings of
dolphins, manta rays, turtles and other
marine life during the expedition.
Time allowing, you'll get close to many lava
tubes, sea caves, sea grottos and wave
powered blow holes. Learn how the island of
Hawaii was formed as your captain shares
their knowledge about the geology of the
island's lava flows.
The Rigid Hull Inflatable Zodiac vessels
used are 24 feet (7 meters) in length,
powered by twin outboard motors to produce a
quick moving and highly maneuverable ride.
The rafts are perfect for exploring the
shallow coves, sea caves and lava tubes
located along this coastline. Each boat can
hold up to 16 passengers.
Due to the bouncy nature of the ride, the
Zodiac Raft Whale Watching Adventure is not
recommended for those with back or neck
problems, or pregnant women. The Kona Coast
has the calmest water and the fast moving
Zodiac is the least likely vessel to cause
seasickness.

Get your binoculars ready for a small group

Puu Oo Trail is a historic cattle drive
route located at the 6,000 foot (1800
meters) level of Saddle Road on Mauna Loa's
northeastern flank. This is the windward
side of the island and is often cloaked in
misty clouds. It is enchanting to be
serenaded by the forest birds as you cross
three to four miles (5-6 km) of lava trail.
At the Humuula hunter check-in station just
off Saddle Road, you'll go into the Kaohe
Game Management Area and four-wheel up to
nearly 7,000 feet (2,100 meters) on the
western side of Mauna Kea.
Some of the avifauna you may spot along the
way are iiwi, apapane, amakihi, omao,
elepaio, and the elusive akiapolaau, with
its unique multipurpose beak. In the
dryforest, the track leads to a locked gate
that is the entrance to the Mauna Kea Forest
Preserve. Here, you'll have the opportunity
to disembark from the van and take in the
spectacular views. Then get down to some
serious bird watching on foot in the
mamane-naio forest.
You'll particularly focus on sighting the
critically threatened palila, which feeds
almost entirely on the green pods of the
mamane tree. There are two other endemics of
note to be found here: the Hawaii amakihi,
and the local species of the Hawaii elepaio
(noted for the white feathering on its
head).
